Setting up internet in the Netherlands: a step-by-step guide

Whether you’re arriving for work, study or love: at some point you’ll sit in your new Dutch home and need Wi-Fi. This is the complete process, from postal-code check to working modem, including the Dutch words you’ll run into along the way.

Step 1: Check what’s available at your address

Dutch internet availability is hyper-local: it depends on your exact postal code and house number, not your city. Fiber (glasvezel) reaches most homes and is the best choice where available; cable covers nearly everything else. Any comparison starts with an address check, ours included.

Step 2: Choose the speed you actually need

This is where newcomers overpay. Providers advertise their fastest bundles, but streaming Netflix in 4K needs 15 Mbps, a video call 3 Mbps. A typical household is comfortable at 50-100 Mbps. Our free calculator adds up your household’s actual usage (people, streams, gaming, home working) and tells you the minimum speed that fits, so you can pick the cheapest subscription that truly works.

Step 3: Order two to three weeks before you move

Activation takes one to three weeks, so order as soon as you know your address. You’ll need:

  • Your new postal code and house number
  • A SEPA IBAN bank account for the monthly direct debit (a Dutch IBAN works best)
  • Not a BSN: internet providers never ask for one

Already have internet and switching providers? The new provider arranges the cancellation of your old contract via the overstapservice, so you don’t have to do anything.

Step 4: Install: usually plug and play

If your home already had a working connection on the same network, the provider mails you a modem and installation is plug-and-play. A brand-new fiber connection may need a technician appointment; the provider schedules this with you after ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to set up internet in the Netherlands?

Just two things: a Dutch address (postal code + house number) and a SEPA IBAN bank account for the monthly direct debit. No BSN, no residence permit paperwork. You can order before your municipal registration is complete.

How far in advance should I order internet before moving?

Two to three weeks before your move-in date is ideal. Activation typically takes 1-3 weeks; ordering ahead means you have internet from (or shortly after) day one instead of sitting in an empty apartment on mobile data.

What is the difference between fiber (glasvezel) and cable in the Netherlands?

Fiber (glasvezel) offers symmetric speeds (upload as fast as download) and is the most future-proof. Cable (via Ziggo) offers high download speeds but slower uploads. For everyday streaming and video calls both are excellent; which one you can get depends on your address.

How does switching internet providers work in the Netherlands?

Surprisingly easy: your new provider arranges the switch, including cancelling your old contract, under the Dutch 'overstapservice'. You order the new subscription and the providers coordinate the transfer date between themselves.

Do I have a cooling-off period after ordering internet?

Yes. Dutch consumer law gives you 14 days bedenktijd (cooling-off period) after an online order, during which you can cancel without giving a reason. Details are always confirmed in the order confirmation email.
